Yes, that's a good question. To make it look better? To store it in a friendly form (pretty url) for later reuse by others? To make it constistent with other url's in the browsers' address bar??
I don't know. I only know I would not rely on javascript unless one's application is requiring javascript and is dead without it anyway.
